Merson was quizzed on SkySports' The Debate (24/8 10pm) and asked to pick the young player to watch in 2017/18.

He explained that he would go for Rashford, even if he admitted it was not an exciting choice.

He said: "For me, Rashford. I wouldn't like to play against him if I was a centre-half.

"He gets me off my seat. I'm a big fan of him."

Rashford has been unlucky not to score this season, hitting the woodwork in the opening victory over West Ham.

His ability to run with the ball has helped provide space for Romelu Lukaku, but he could be under pressure for a start this weekend.

France international Anthony Martial's late impact from the bench could cause Jose Mourinho to change his starting line up.

Rashford has played well, but Martial has made a serious case for a start by also linking up well and netting twice in 25 minutes of football.
