Newcastle United kicked off life back in the Premier League by being beaten 2-0 by Tottenham at St James' Park in a game that certainly had its controversial moments.
Rafa Benitez's men went into the break level with last season's title contenders, but the game changed three minutes into the second-half when Jonjo Shelvey was sent off after stepping on Spurs midfielder Dele Alli.

Alli then broke the deadlock 13 minutes later, before left-back Ben Davies doubled Spurs' lead 20 minutes from time - leaving the Magpies 19th in the Premier League table with the opening weekend almost complete.
Shelvey's mistake - for which, he received plenty of criticism from his own supporters on social media - overshadowed the club's return to the top flight, but one player's performance gave the Newcastle fans something to be positive about.
Christian Atsu looked lively on the wing and appeared to cause Kyle Walker-Peters plenty of problems throughout the game, and the Magpies supporters were extremely pleased with what they saw from the former Chelsea man, suggesting that he could prove to be a bargain signing for the club.

First game against a side that will be up there! Just hope the injuries aren't serious. Atsu standout performer today. Onto the next one— Alex Wilson (@AlexWilson_11) 13 August 2017
We need to do something. Today was pretty shocking in last third. Atsu the only player who looked good.— John Walker (@Macjakedom) 13 August 2017
Atsu had Walkers-peters on toast!! How on earthhh has he managed to get man of the match— Michael Wallace (@wallaceKP) 13 August 2017
Lots of positives today. Manquillo looked decent (for a change) Atsu dangerous and Merino looks a player. Still spoilt my weekend though— Craigy B (@craigyb333) 13 August 2017
Atsu the only one making things happen in the final third, but we can't rely on him as much looking ahead. #NUFC man of the match for me.— The Toon Network (@TheToonNetwork) 13 August 2017
Disappointing start, but thought Atsu was brilliant. Shelvey— Ashley Garland (@gaarland) 13 August 2017
Atsu looked excellent throughout. A real positive. @lejeune_florian too before he had to go off.— NUFC Follower (@NUFCFollower) 13 August 2017
Very impressed with Christian Atsu to be fair. Play like that against lesser opposition and he'll cause mayhem down the left. #NUFC— Kevin Doocey (@KevinDoocey) 13 August 2017
Merino looks comfortable and ready, Manquillo looked really good, Atsu class. Need more players and fast #NUFC— Its Bryson (@Eric_Bryson_89) 13 August 2017
Everyone looked good today, including the new guys. Atsu was superb. Attacking (unsurprisingly) is an issue, but defensively we looked good— Austin Scott (@Austin_14Scott) 13 August 2017
