Newcastle United supporters had very little to celebrate in their defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, but Christian Atsu's display gave them reason for optimism.

Newcastle United kicked off life back in the Premier League by being beaten 2-0 by Tottenham at St James' Park in a game that certainly had its controversial moments.

Rafa Benitez's men went into the break level with last season's title contenders, but the game changed three minutes into the second-half when Jonjo Shelvey was sent off after stepping on Spurs midfielder Dele Alli.

Alli then broke the deadlock 13 minutes later, before left-back Ben Davies doubled Spurs' lead 20 minutes from time - leaving the Magpies 19th in the Premier League table with the opening weekend almost complete.

Shelvey's mistake - for which, he received plenty of criticism from his own supporters on social media - overshadowed the club's return to the top flight, but one player's performance gave the Newcastle fans something to be positive about.

Christian Atsu looked lively on the wing and appeared to cause Kyle Walker-Peters plenty of problems throughout the game, and the Magpies supporters were extremely pleased with what they saw from the former Chelsea man, suggesting that he could prove to be a bargain signing for the club.
