BBC pundit Alan Shearer says Liverpool must sell Philippe Coutinho.
Former Newcastle United striker and BBC pundit Alan Shearer says that Liverpool should sell Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho this summer.
Coutinho has shocked Liverpool fans by handing a transfer request, but the request was swiftly turned down.
The Brazilian stated his desire to leave the club via email only hours after Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) issued a statement saying that the player would not be sold during the current transfer window.
Coutinho has been reportedly wanted by Barcelona, whose latest bid of around £90 million was rejected by Liverpool on Wednesday.
The Brazilian signed a new five-year deal with the Reds in January, with no release clause, which gives Liverpool an upper hand if they opt to negotiate.
Alan Shearer believes that the writing is already on the wall, and that Liverpool should take the money offered by the Catalan giants.
“They’ve got to sell him, he’s made his intentions clear," said Shearer on Match of the Day (h/t Daily Star).
“He doesn’t want to be there. I think you take the money and run.”
It seems a last ditch attempt by the midfielder to force through a move, and the timing could not be any worse.
