Spurs are still the only Premier League club yet to make a new signing, with Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy so far refraining from making a big splash in a summer where transfer fees have been astronomical.
Anthony Martial (R)
That doesn't mean that Tottenham aren't in the market for new signings though, and many fans are hoping that a forward with pace is brought in before the end of the transfer window later this month.
Now, French media outlet RMC Sport report that Tottenham have made a move to purchase Manchester United attacker Anthony Martial - but the Red Devils have rebuffed that approach from Pochettino's men.
It's also noted that Inter Milan wanted to take Martial on loan, but United have also rejected that move as they attempt to keep hold of Martial despite his limited playing time under Jose Mourinho last season.
The French forward, 21, hit the headlines with a superb debut season at Old Trafford, notching 17 goals in 49 games following a 2015 move from Monaco, but he started just 18 league games last season as Mourinho was left unconvinced by his defensive contribution.
Jelle Van Damme challenges Anthony Martial
It remains to be seen what role Martial has this season, but after The Telegraph reported in 2015 that Tottenham wanted to sign Martial from Monaco, it's little surprise to see them make a fresh attempt to sign him this summer.
Ultimately though, it's unlikely that Mourinho would sanction a deal to a direct rival, unless they received a player in exchange, such as Danny Rose or Eric Dier, two Spurs players who have been linked with moves to Old Trafford - but Spurs are unlikely to accept that either, meaning a move for Martial could now be dead.
