Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk has released a statement, as seen on BBC Sport, stating that he wants to leave the club this summer, effectively handing in a transfer request.
With seven goals in 68 appearances for the Saints, Van Dijk has not only excelled as a defender, but also provided a goal threat since making his move to St. Mary's Stadium.
Van Dijk has starred with his aerial ability, power, pace and ability on the ball, emerging as one of the most complete central defenders in Europe – and that has unsurprisingly triggered major interest in his signature.
Liverpool were pushing to sign Van Dijk earlier this summer, but after Southampton reported the Reds for tapping up the 25-year-old defender, Jurgen Klopp's men confirmed on their official website that they were backing out of the race to sign him.
Speculation has surrounded Van Dijk's future ever since, and having been training away from the first team, he has now signalled his intention to leave Southampton and make a move before this month's transfer window.
Unsurprisingly, Liverpool fans are clamouring for the club to make a new move for Van Dijk, believing that he is the game changing centre back that Klopp needs to strengthen his back line
Some fans have little belief that Liverpool can seal a deal though, and fear that the Fenway Sports Group won't cough up the money required to sign Van Dijk before the transfer deadline.
Van Dijk could drive to Melwood and Liverpool would still screw it up. Not holding my breath we will be signing him. #LFC— ️️ (@xcpdawsonx) August 7, 2017
If we don't get van Dijk now especially after he putting in a transfer request, we should just liquidate! #LFC— Heartless Tyrant (@KevinEmmanuel93) August 7, 2017
About time Van Dijk made a move, time for FSG to cough up the money. Need to improve the defence desperately #LFC— James (@Jigg244) August 7, 2017
If Klopp is wise enough he should seal this Van dijk deal once and for all. He started it. It'll be shameful if #lfc couldn't sign him.— JYDINHO SIMIDU (@Jydinho) August 7, 2017
