Josh Onomah has joined Aston Villa on a season-long loan deal from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has explained to Football.London his decision to allow Josh Onomah to join Aston Villa on loan.

Onomah has joined Championship club Villa on a season-long loan deal from Premier League outfit Tottenham in the summer transfer window.

This is the first time that the 20-year-old midfielder has been sent out on loan to another club by Spurs.

The England Under-21 international is one of the best and most promising young players in England, and it may have come as a surprise to Tottenham fans when it was announced that the midfielder was leaving on loan for a club in the Championship.

Pochettino has explained decision to let Onomah move to Villa on loan for the 2017-18 campaign.

“Because every six months we need to review every single situation and Josh, after the U20 World Cup I think in his mind it was to play more and prove himself that he can play,” Pochettino told Football.London when asked about his decision regarding Onomah.

“There were a lot of rumours about his position on the pitch. He can play as an 8, a 6, a 7 or 10 or 11, I think that is not the problem. He needs to prove himself that he can play.

“It's a great opportunity for him now at Aston Villa to prove himself and prove to everyone that he is a player that can learn and improve and will be useful for Tottenham.”

Onomah is a hugely talented midfielder, and playing in the Championship is only going to make him a better footballer.

Villa will be aiming to finish in the top six of the Championship this season, and the youngster could prove to be a very shrewd signing for Steve Bruce's side.
