The Daily Mirror reported the above on its live transfer blog this morning (Friday), adding the Hammers believe they can land the defender for 'just over half' of Sunderland's £20 million asking price.

Kone's Stadium of Light career began brightly, sparking reports of interest from several clubs of which Everton were perhaps the most prominently linked.
But one disappointing season, which ended in Sunderland's relegation to the Championship, and some ill-advised comments about his commitment from teammate Darron Gibson later, few of a Mackems persuasion are likely to mind if Kone was to leave the club this summer.
In fact, many on Twitter are actively seeking his departure, and West Ham fans in equal numbers are actively hoping he doesn't join them.
