Liverpool fans have suggested on social networking site Twitter that the club should make a move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld in the summer transfer window.
Alderweireld is one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League and has been on the books of Tottenham since the summer of 2015.
The 28-year-old Belgium international has a contract with the North London club until June 2019, according to The London Evening Standard.
According to The London Evening Standard, Tottenham have the option of extending that deal by a further year which would also activate a £25m release clause in the summer of 2019.
Alderweireld recently told Sky Sports that contract talks with Spurs have not progressed, and some Liverpool fans want the Reds to take advantage of this situation and make a move for the former Ajax star in the summer transfer window.
According to The Liverpool Echo, Liverpool want to sign Netherlands international centre-back Virgil van Dijk from Southampton this summer, but with not much progress in that deal yet, some Reds supporters want the club to turn their attention towards Alderweireld.
Happily throw a few bids in for the likes of Varane, Alderweireld, Vertonghen etc.— Oz (@OzlaaLFC) 2 August 2017
I don't want to be greedy, but if we get VVD then we should go in for Toby alderweireld next. Defence would be like a brick wall #LFC— Terry (@Terry_LFC5) 30 July 2017
You should be all over Toby Alderweireld if there's even a remote chance. Said this a long time ago, @LFC— Nishen Padayachee (@nishen_p) 30 July 2017
Alderweireld is the only CB in the PL I would say is better than Van Dijk, only slightly.— Jonny Alves (@JonnyLFC93) 30 July 2017
I'd spend like £40m on Alderweireld and £75-80m on VvD. the trophies would start raining in. #LFC— #VvDwantsout (@MattiasArvidss1) 30 July 2017
