Leeds United have signed Matthew Pennington on loan from Everton.

Matthew Pennington has told the Yorkshire Evening Post that Leeds United’s support in Austria has already shown him that he made the right decision to move to Elland Road.

Pennington made his first appearance for Leeds yesterday, after signing on a season-long loan from Everton.

The centre-back came on as a second-half substitute, during Leeds’ 1-1 draw against Borussia Monchengladbach.

And Pennington was taken aback by how many Leeds supporters had travelled to watch the side on their pre-season tour.

The 23-year-old said: “Seeing this many fans in Austria for a friendly tells you what a good move this is.”

Leeds scored their goal against Monchengladbach through Luke Ayling, before the German side equalised in the second-half.

Pennington could have a key role to play for Leeds in the upcoming campaign, as Thomas Christiansen’s options at the back are still fairly short.

Leeds only have three centre-backs to pick from, with Pennington set to be in competition with Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper for a place in the Whites’ starting line-up.

Leeds have one more game left on their tour of Austria, when they are set to take on Eibar.
