The former Liverpool boss is a big fan of the Southampton defender.

Graeme Souness was talking on TalkSport earlier this week about Liverpool’s transfer situation, and he was clear that there was one signing that Klopp has to get over the line to put Liverpool in a stronger situation for the new season.

“I’m an enormous fan of Van Dijk. I’d have loved him to go to Liverpool,” said Souness.

“When someone plays and makes things look easy, that tells you that they are really good at what they do. Whoever gets him would improve them greatly, and it’ll be a shame if it’s not Liverpool.”

While Souness hopes the move may still happen, he was unsure that Liverpool would see this transfer through to a successful conclusion.

“I’d have pushed the boat out and do whatever you had to do to get the boy – Van Dijk. It looks like Southampton are digging their heels in, but you know – Southampton do sell players. They have done persistently over the last few years.”

Southampton’s hand could still be forced by player power. According to the Sun, Van Dijk has told Southampton that he wants to join Liverpool.

Southampton found it hard to stop Jose Fonte once he had made his intentions clear, with a transfer request last January that eventually saw him move to West Ham United.

Even though Liverpool may have felt embarrassed by Southampton’s claim of tapping-up Van Dijk, according to the Sun, they were cleared by the Premier League, as the Guardian reports.

There is little to stop Liverpool putting in a bid, if they really want to meet the suggested £60 million price-tag that Southampton are asking, says the Sun. But somehow, Liverpool appear paralysed.

The Mersysiders have done some good business with Southampton in the past with Adam Lallana, Saido Mane, Dejan Lovren, Rickie Lambert and Nathaniel Clyne costing nearly £100 million, says the Liverpool Echo.

But the Van Dijk deal remains in the air. It’s frustrating, not only for Graeme Souness, but many Liverpool fans too.
