Doncaster Rovers striker John Marquis is poised to sign a new long-term deal at the club, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Marquis initially rejected the club's offer of a new deal earlier this month, but talks have continued and a compromise has now been reached to see the striker agree fresh terms.

Marquis was entering the final year of his contract at Doncaster this summer and the club were keen to reward with a new deal.

A number of Championship and League One clubs were monitoring Marquis' situation at the Keepmoat Stadium as they weighed up moves for the former Millwall forward.

Marquis has been a revelation for Doncaster since joining on a free transfer from Millwall last summer.

The 25-year-old scored 26 goals last season as he fired Doncaster to promotion to League One and he League Two Player of the Year award following his exploits.

Doncaster were bracing themselves for interest in their top scorer this summer, but news of his new deal will come as a major boost to Darren Ferguson's side as they continue their plans for life back in League One next season.
