Bolton are trying to beat Championship rivals Birmingham City and Derby County to Lens striker Habib Habibou, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Habibou impressed at Lens last season after joining the club from Rennes last January.

The Central African Republic international scored seven goals in 14 games in Ligue 2 and his performances have alerted a number of clubs.

Birmingham and Derby have both shown an interest in the 30-year-old, but Bolton are hoping to steal a march on their rivals by luring him to the Macron Stadium.

Bolton boss Phil Parkinson is still looking to bolster his squad as he prepares for life back in the Championship and he sees Habibou as someone who can add goals to his strikeforce.

Habibou had a short spell in England before at Leeds United during the 2012/13 season after arriving on loan from Zulte Waregem on transfer deadline day in January.

Habibou went onto make only one start and three substitute appearances for Leeds, failing to score and he returned to Zulte at the end of his loan spell.

Bolton are now ready to offer Habibou a second crack at playing in England and they are locked in talks with Lens as they look to secure his signature.
