Did Tottenham make a big mistake over incoming Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette?

Arsenal are on the verge of completing a club record move for Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette for a club record £52 million, The Telegraph report.

It is a staggering fee and one which may well be justified for a player who netted 37 goals last season.

Arsenal’s board are right to back manager Arsene Wenger, and their fans have been taunting rivals Spurs, convinced that they are putting them in their place – despite finishing below them last season.

Tottenham might well kick themselves.

The Mirror reported last year that they had entered negotiations with Lyon, but chairman Daniel Levy was only prepared to offer £24 million.

Lacazette has now gone for twice that price. Tottenham meanwhile went onto spend £30 million on Moussa Sissoko and have regretted it ever since.

Spurs had only Europa League football to offer at the time and could have struggled to tempt Lacazette, but Arsenal are in the same scenario this time around and appear to have managed.

Indeed if Arsenal had shown this much ambition in 2015 when they signed only Petr Cech, perhaps they could have gone on to beat Leicester to the league title.

Both teams have reason to regret, but it is Arsenal and not Tottenham who have Lacazette now. Spurs already have their star striker in Harry Kane, but still need to add competition with Vincent Janssen failing to convince.
