Should Newcastle use Sheffield Wednesday's interest in Grant Hanley and propose swap involving 2015 target Tom Lees?

Sheffield Wednesday are interested in signing Newcastle United defender Grant Hanley this summer.

According to a report from the Chronicle last month, Newcastle hope to sign two new centre-backs during the summer transfer window. So while they have now added Florian Lejeune, it appears that Rafa Benitez will still want to bolster his defensive options before the new Premier League season starts.

So perhaps he should consider using Sheffield Wednesday's interest in one of his players as an opportunity to target a player who the Magpies wanted back in 2015.

The Daily Mirror reported earlier this month (print edition; 3rd July 2017; pg. 47) that the Owls want to sign Grant Hanley from Newcastle, and are prepared to spend £5.5 million on the Scotland international.

While it may be difficult to convince Wednesday to sanction such a deal, it is surely worth Newcastle suggesting to the Championship side that they can have Hanley, but only if Tom Lees heads to St James' Park.

Lees has been a stalwart of the Owls side over the past few years and has arguably established himself as one of the best centre-backs in the second tier - something that Newcastle are clearly aware of, with the Daily Mirror reporting back in 2015 that they wanted to sign the former Leeds man

Lees' importance to Sheffield Wednesday coupled with the fact that Newcastle have made Hanley available to leave (via Chronicle) surely means that Wednesday would have to be the ones to receive a fee for a deal to get a green light.

But given how well Lees has performed over the last few seasons, he would arguably be a brilliant target to potentially fill that second centre-back signing slot that Benitez craves this summer.
