Stephan Lichtsteiner would be an exceptional signing for Newcastle

Newcastle United should seriously consider a move for the Juventus defender this summer.

Magpies fans will be expecting some high quality additions at their club this summer, as Rafa Benitez attempts to build a squad capable of enjoying a successful season in the Premier League.

One particular area of concern for the Spaniard will be his lack of options at right-back, after he made the decision not to renew Vurnon Anita's contract with the club last month.

With this in mind, the addition of an established right-back will surely feature highly on Benitez' agenda this summer, and an interesting option for Newcastle could be Juventus' experienced full-back Stephan Lichtsteiner.

The 90-capped Switzerland international is one of the most resolute defenders in the game, and his tenacious, aggressive playing style would be perfectly suited to the robust nature of the English game.

At 33, Lichtsteiner is arguably past his best, but the fact that he has kept himself in impeccable physical condition means that he still has many more years of playing at the very highest level.

The former Lazio man joined the Turin giants in 2011 from Lazio and has since gone on to establish himself as one of the continent's most consistent and reliable defenders.

He fell out of favour with Massimiliano Allegri last term, however, making just 22 Serie A starts, and with just one year remaining on his current deal with the Old Lady, the Italian's might just be willing to sell him this summer, rather than risk losing him for nothing next year.

Convincing the Swiss star into moving to Tyneside form Turin might well seem ambitious, but with a manager like Benitez at the helm, and the reputation he has garnered within the game, Newcastle are still a hugely attractive prospect for any potential signings.

And if the Spaniard does manage to bring Lichtsteiner to St James' Park, it could prove to be a hugely significant acquisition for the Magpies.
