Nikos Dabizas outlines what Newcastle's target for Premier League return should be

Newcastle United are preparing for their return to the Premier League, and their former defender has suggested what their target should be.

Former Newcastle defender Nikos Dabizas has suggested to the Chronicle that the Magpies can be pleased with their upcoming season if they manage to finish in mid-table in the Premier League, and added that Rafa Benitez's men can perhaps target winning one of the domestic cups.

Newcastle are gearing up for their return to the top flight after clinching the Championship title this past season. But while Benitez's presence at the club continues to provide reason for optimism, it could be argued that their prospects of thriving in the top tier have been dampened by the lack of transfer activity at St James' Park.

That lack of business has forced many of the Toon Army to be realistic about their chances of success next season. But Dabizas has suggested that a solid finish in the league would be a good return, especially if they can win some silverware in another competition.

"Finishing mid-table will be a success," he told the Chronicle.

“They are back in the Premier League but the competition is even tougher now."

“There is a realistic chance to win some silverware though," he would later add.

“It could be the FA Cup or it could be the EFL Cup."

While the summer may not have gone to plan for Benitez so far, there is no question that there is more than enough time before they take on Tottenham on the opening day of the season for new signings to integrate into the team.

And with a squad already at Benitez's disposal that looked destined for promotion almost from the moment that it was announced that he planned to stay following their relegation, there is surely no reason why, with a couple of marquee signings and with some luck regarding injuries, they cannot meet the expectations that Dabizas has suggested.
