Norwich’s Jonny Howson in action with Nottingham Forest’s David Vaughan
Middlesbrough are closing in on a deal for Norwich City midfielder Jonny Howson, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.
Middlesbrough boss Gary Monk has made Howson one of his top transfer targets after taking over at the Riverside as he looks to build a side capable of winning promotion back to the Premier League next season.
Middlesbrough saw their opening offer for Howson rejected by Norwich, but they are now back with an improved offer for the former Leeds star.
Norwich are reluctantly willing to cash-in on Howson as the player is keen to move back north and his sale will boost their transfer kitty to strengthen the squad at Carrow Road.
Leeds had been tracking their old player Jonny Howson
Howson’s former club Leeds and Premier League Burnley both expressed an interest in the 29-year-old, but it looks like Middlesbrough are set to win the race for Howson’s signature.
Howson has spent the last five years at Norwich after joining the club from Leeds in 2012 and he established himself as a key player for the Canaries.
Middlesbrough are confident of tying up a deal for Howson later this week to make him Monk’s first signing at the club.
