It is an unfortunate by-product of social media’s ‘Chinese Whisper’ tendencies that a few dodgy performances can turn an unfortunate footballer into a scapegoat.
Many Dortmund fans will argue that this is exactly the problem facing Matthias Ginter. The German international hasn’t exactly been the most consistent, or indeed reliable presence in Die Schwarzgelben’s backline since moving from Freiburg three years ago, his tendency to lose concentration a particular bugbear.
But there is little doubt that Ginter has the potential to develop into an impressive modern centre-back.
Matthias Ginter won the World Cup in 2014
With poise in possession and improving positional sense, epitomised by his effective displays in Joachim Low’s back three at the Confederations Cup in Russia, the 23-year-old has potential by the bucketload and plenty of time to fulfil it.
Yet the noises coming out of Germany may make Tottenham Hotspur fans a little concerned as Bild report that Dortmund manager Peter Bosz is preparing for life without Ginter next season. The Sun claims that Spurs mad a £15 million bid and North London is his likely destination.
Many Dortmund supporters hope to see Ginter given a chance under the new regime, particularly with a manager whose ability to hone young talent helped a fresh-faced Ajax reach the Europa League final.
Yet a huge number appear to the counting down the days until Ginter is forced out. Whether this should serve as a warning for Spurs remains to be seen.
