Jay Rodriguez in happier times
Of all the strikers linked with Newcastle United this summer, from Andre Gray to Michy Batshuayi, it appears that Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez is the most likely to end up at St James’ Park.
According to The Sun, the newly promoted North East outfit are locked in a three way battle with West Brom and former club Burnley for the signature of a player who, if it wasn’t for a horribly timed cruciate ligament injury, might have been a member of England’s 2014 World Cup squad.
Rodriguez is yet to rediscover his best form in the three years since, however, meaning that Southampton’s £15 million price tag has fans worried.
He started just nine games last season and netted six goals – not exactly the output you’d want for a player with such a huge asking price.
However, The Sun adds that West Brom are the current favourites to land the 27-year-old this summer. And that may please a number of Newcastle supporters concerned about Rodriguez’s injury record.
After all, the club don’t have a great track record when it comes to players with questionable fitness levels, see Michael Owen and Albert Luque.
Though Rodriguez is an undoubted talent at the peak of his powers, it appears that some supporters believe the deal is simply far too much of a risk.
West Brom, then, could offer Newcastle a lucky escape, depending on who you ask.
We should be going for Rodriguez like, can play everywhere in attack and is English and still young #nufc— josh young (@J_Young90) June 20, 2017
I like the idea of Jay Rodriguez, he's had a few injury problems but he looks a good player and is still at a good age #nufc— Danny Roberts (@dannyJroberts26) June 20, 2017
For 15 mil no way the fact he can't get a game for Southampton no thank you we need quality— scratchy (@Gumbohaha) June 20, 2017
Am I the only one really not keen on Cabellero?? I'd have Jay tho excellent impact player and proven goal scorer— Sean (@M4sterOvPuppets) June 20, 2017
Chambers, Lejeune, Gibbs, Rodriguez, Acquah, Cairney, Aboubakar plus a couple of loans... be well happy if we got these #NUFC— Dayle (@DayleBarron) June 20, 2017
Barnes and Gray are Championship standard. Sturridge would hardly play. Rodriguez would be decent back up for Gayle. Should go for King— Jack Challis (@JChallis11) May 21, 2017
I would take him but I doubt he would be a starter.— HaX (@Haxerino) May 15, 2017
