Patrick Vieira is the new bookies favourite to succeed Claude Puel as Southampton manager.

The New York City boss has seen his odds cut from 8/1 to 5/4 over the weekend [Sky Bet], despite reports which suggested the Saints were close to appointing Mauricio Pellegrino [The Sun].

Pellegrino, the former manager of Deportivo Alaves, is only slightly behind Vieira at 7/4, with Frank de Boer, most recently of Inter Milan, the 6/1 third favourite.

Vieira, who represented clubs including Arsenal, Juventus and Inter during a glittering playing career, is in his first senior role having previously managed Manchester City's Elite Development Squad.

The 40-year-old Frenchman led New York to their maiden Major League Soccer play-off campaign in his first season in charge of the newly-formed franchise.

Sky Bet's latest odds suggest that Ryan Giggs [8/1], Jaap Stam [12/1], Markus Weinzierl and Roberto Martinez [both 18/1] are also in contention to land the Southampton post.
