Should Everton revisit interest in Aboubakar with striker reported to be close to Newcastle deal?

Everton were interested in Vincent Aboubakar last summer. Should they take another look?

AboubakarPremier League bound? Vincent Aboubakar

Newcastle United are confident of signing Porto striker Vincent Aboubakar, according to The Express.

The Cameroon international is claimed to be closing in on a £9 million move to the Toon, whose late interest has hijacked a potential move to Rennes.

Aboubakar spent last season on loan at Besiktas, where he scored 19 goals in 38 games for the Turkish side.

He was very nearly already playing in the Premier League, with The Mail reporting Everton were strongly interested last summer.

It was claimed the Toffees had opened talks with Porto over a £16 million transfer, but no agreement could ultimately be reached and he ended up moving on loan instead.

While Everton evidently didn't want to pay Porto's valuation last summer, the now quoted £9 million fee is a bargain.

Aboubakar has had a good past season and at 25 he has plenty more to offer.

With the Toffees facing having to replace Romelu Lukaku if he forces through a move to Chelsea, a comparably small fee for Aboubakar would be a no brainer for a striker with his Champions League experience.

Newcastle would be best advised to rush through a deal as quickly as possible, so no other teams can jump in on their potential bargain.

Everton right regret not taking a second look.
