Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race to sign Chris Smalling, The Sun reports.

Smalling has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford under Jose Mourinho and his chances are likely to be even more limited after the Red Devils signed Victor Lindelof.

Tottenham are one of many sides to be linked with signing the centre-back, but they are the only team so far who would be able to offer the defender Champions League football next season.

Smalling likely needs a move if he is to earn a spot in England's World Cup squad next summer.

Yet whether a switch to Tottenham actually enhances that is another matter. His best chance is if Mauricio Pochettino pushes ahead with playing three at the back.

United have been linked with a move for Tottenham ace Eric Dier, with The Sun reporting that Spurs want a whopping £50 million for his signature.

A potential swap deal is in play, if both sides are committed to signing the other's player, although Tottenham will take a lot more convincing to sell Dier than United would with Smalling.
