The Saints must ensure that they bring in some top quality additions this summer, irrelevant of who is appointed as the new manager, if they are to make genuine progress, and make a sustained push for the Europa League spots next season.

Southampton fans have become used to the club flogging their best players for extortionate amounts of money, without truly reinvesting the proceeds into the playing squad.

They will be hoping, however, that their club bucks that recent trend this summer, and an ideal way for them to start doing that would be by signing Manchester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho.

The Nigerian has been heavily linked with a move to West Ham in recent weeks (the Sun) but he would arguably be more suited to the south coast outfit's more fluent setup.

The 20-year-old has pace in abundance, and with his ability to stretch the opposition's defence, he would provide a totally different threat for the Saints, by offering them a potent attacking outlet, which they are currently so desperately bereft of.

Iheanacho would be the ideal strike partner for Manolo Gabbiadini. The Italian is an exceptional finisher, but his lack of pace limits his overall contribution to the team. If paired with the City forward, however, he could become even more of a threat for the Saints, what with the Nigeria international's ability to draw defenders out of position, and in doing so, creating more space for his teammates.

The former Napoli man would surely then flourish, if given more space within which to operate.

The 20-year-old has never really been given an extensive run of games at the Etihad, and a switch to St Mary's could be just what he needs to help breathe life back into his fledgling career.

And if Southampton did manage to sign Iheanacho, their fans would finally have something to shout about.
