The West Ham United man had a night to forget on international duty.
The 33-year-old started 16 Premier League games following his £8 million switch but it was obvious that the Irons might have overpaid for the Portugal defender.
And the Hammers man offered further evidence of this on international duty on Sunday during a Confederations Cup clash with Mexico.
Portugal looked on course to win their opening match 2-1 after Cedric Soares netted what looked to be an 86th-minute clincher for the Portuguese.
But Hector Moreno grabbed a 92nd-minute equaliser for Mexico and replays confirmed that the West Ham man, who had made a couple of errors prior to that, was culpable for the concession after allowing Moreno to outfox him for the header.
And suffice to say that Twitter was not sympathetic in the least as a whole lost of users ripped into Fonte.
Fonte has had an absolute mare https://t.co/EXYNYIMqne— West Ham United News (@WestHam_fl) June 18, 2017
Some dreadful defending by Jose Fonte for the Mexico equalizer. Dude has been atrocious since moving to West Ham.— Afolabi.A.Folarin (@Folarinfotos) June 18, 2017
Apparently Jose Fonte has done it again hahaah— West Ham Transfers (@westhamtransfer) June 18, 2017
Fonte doesn't make our first team next year. Reid and Ogbonna all day, Fonte has been piss poor for us and he just showed why today.— The West Ham Yank (@TheWestHamYank) June 18, 2017
Pretty poor game from Fonte, was totally at fault for the equaliser and struggled to keep pace with the Mexican forwards all game.— TheWestHamWayCoUk (@WestHamWaycouk) June 18, 2017
Did west ham actually pay money for Jose fonte?— Alexbateman (@alexbateman7) June 18, 2017
Fonte is a disgrace.— James Brand (@hammerandtalk) June 18, 2017
Ashamed to call him a West Ham player.
Pushing the player in the face and still being beaten. Very poor.
I tell you what, Jose Fonte has been absolutely abysmal for Portugal.— FTS Football (@FromTStands) June 18, 2017
Again, Jose Fonte is awful. I mean, really really awful!— Moe (@Moe_Mufc) June 18, 2017
Fonte would do well to remain at the East London club beyond this summer. He is, at the moment, too close to the first team and Slaven Bilic should really cut his losses and look to move him on.
