According to L’Equipe, Newcastle United are interested in signing Maxime Gonalons from Lyon in the summer transfer window.

As reported by The Shields Gazette, Gonalons’s relationship with Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has deteriorated, and that the defensive midfielder is available for around £4.5 million.

The France international did not have a great 2016-17 season on a personal level, but there is no doubt that he would be a stunning signing for Newcastle.

Gonalons has been at Lyon his entire professional career so far and has a lot of experience at the highest level, having featured in the Champions League.

Lyon are a big and ambitious club in France, and having played for them, the 28-year-old knows what it means to challenge for trophies and play under pressure.

Newcastle will be aiming to push for a top-10 finish in the Premier League next season, and signing a player like Gonalons would be a statement of intent.

It would show that the Magpies are able to attract very good and well-known players despite spending a season in the Championship.
