Calum Chambers' versatility means Newcastle should match Arsenal's valuation

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez

As Newcastle United look to make a number of summer signings, they should bite the bullet and pay Arsenal's asking price for versatile Calum Chambers.

Newcastle United and Everton are both interested in Arsenal defender Calum Chambers, according to the Chronicle.

The England under-21 international impressed last season on loan at Middlesbrough and is allegedly interesting the Premier League pair, although the same report suggests Newcastle may balk at a £15million asking price.

But the Magpies would be wise to match that valuation in what is set to be a busy summer for Rafa Benitez as Chambers, crucially, can cover at both right-back and centre-back.

Newcastle have already seen Vurnon Anita and Kevin Mbabu leave the club in this transfer window, while, in the middle, Grant Hanley has been linked with a number of Championship side - including Sheffield Wednesday in The Star.

Benitez's alternative right-back options to DeAndre Yedlin lack the Premier League experience of Chambers, who would also be able to compete with Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark and Chancel Mbemba for a central berth.

The Chronicle have claimed Newcastle are wanting up to 12 signings this summer as they prepare for a return to the top flight and Chambers' versatility would mean killing two birds with one stone at the back.
