According to The Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur have told Manchester United that they want £50 million in order to part company with Eric Dier in the summer transfer window.
It has been reported that United manager Jose Mourinho sees Dier as a long-term replacement for Michael Carrick in midfield.
The 23-year-old Tottenham star is a versatile player who can operate as a defender or as a defensive midfielder.
“Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy’s £50 million valuation of Dier is more than United expected to pay for the 23-year-old who has developed considerably under Mauricio Pochettino,” states the report in The Telegraph.
“He can also play at centre-back but it is in midfield that Mourinho sees him in the long term. It is there that Dier prefers to play despite having featured at centre-back for periods last season and occasionally at full-back.”
Dier is one of the best players in the current Tottenham squad, and it makes sense that the North London outfit want as much as £50m in order to part company with the 23-year-old.
However, if United do make an offer of £50m, then Spurs should accept it. Tottenham would make a massive profit, as they paid only £4 million to sign Dier from Sporting Lisbon back in the summer of 2014, as reported by BBC Sport.
If the England international does want to play in midfield regularly and Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino is not able to do that for him, then it would make sense for Dier to switch to Old Trafford.
United may be reluctant to pay £50m for Dier, but there is no doubt that he is hugely talented and very versatile, and he would prove to a brilliant long-term signing for the Red Devils.
