The 49-year-old led Sheffield United to promotion as League One champions in his first season in charge at Bramall Lane, and it would perhaps take something special to lure him away from his boyhood club.
But if he was to take the reins at Sunderland, could he target these three stars to join him?
Jack O'Connell [Sheffield United]
Sunderland have released Joleon Lescott and John O'Shea, while Papy Djilobodji and Lamine Kone could also be moved on, leaving the Mackems with holes to plug at the back. O'Connell looked bright in his previous Championship spell at Brentford, and excelled under Wilder in his maiden campaign Bramall Lane. Sunderland fans would love his committed approach and, at 23, he'd be a signing for years to come.
John Fleck [Sheffield United]
Sunderland's midfield is in need of re-energising, and Fleck could be the man to do it. The former Rangers prodigy was another of Wilder's standout 2016 recruits, and pulled most of the strings as the Blades romped to the League One title - earning himself a spot in the divisional team of the year. A move to the Stadium of Light would bring him closer to his native Glasgow.
With Wahbi Khazri's future uncertain, Sunderland will perhaps need reinforcements out wide. Holmes was Charlton's star man this past season, scoring 13 goals and creating six in 35 League One outings, and is said to be wanted by Wilder at Bramall Lane, having worked with the Sheffield United boss at Northampton Town. He's unlikely to think twice about a reunion, be it in South Yorkshire or Wearside.
Could Wilder leave Sheffield United for Sunderland?
