Slow transfer progress could give Karl Darlow and Aleksandar Mitrovic hope at Newcastle

Karl Darlow and Aleksandar Mitrovic had looked set to depart St James' Park, but a lack of movement on Tyneside could give the pair a second chance.

A number of Newcastle United players have been linked with moves away from St James' Park since Rafa Benitez's men clinched the Championship title in May.

Benitez is widely expected to make vast changes to his squad, with a number of squad members set to leave and - according to the Chronicle - up to 12 new faces to be brought in.

A report in the same newspaper states that Tim Krul, Karl Darlow, Grant Hanley, Jack Colback and Daryl Murphy are among those up for sale, while the Daily Mirror suggests Aleksandar Mitrovic could also depart.

But, with the start of pre-season training just over two weeks away, a permanent deal for Christian Atsu remains Newcastle's only signing.

And so outgoings have been limited, too, meaning that the majority of the players Benitez may wish to move on will train with the Magpies this summer as they prepare to return to the Premier League.

For Darlow and Mitrovic in particular - two key players previously under Benitez - this could be seen as an opportunity to impress and cling on to their places in the Newcastle squad.

Moves for Pepe Reina - according to the Chronicle - and Tammy Abraham - according to the Northern Echo - have so far failed to materialise, giving two popular members of last season's squad hope that they could earn a reprieve.
