If they appoint the Spanish legend, Leeds will certainly be hoping he can bring similar success to the Reading boss.
Spain’s Fernando Hierro at Euro 96
In a surprising twist to the Leeds United managerial saga, Fernando Hierro was installed as favourite by SkyBet last night to land the vacant post.
Hierro left Spanish side Real Oviedo last night by mutual consent, and is hoping to establish a managerial career which can hold a candle to his supremely successful playing days.
The former Real Madrid and Spain captain was one of the greatest defenders of his era, winning five La Liga title and three Champions League trophies.
Leeds had previously been linked to Reading boss Jaap Stam by the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Stam was another fantastic centre-back in his playing days, and one who is in the early stages of his forays into management.
Reading took a calculated gamble on the Dutchman last summer, bringing him in despite the fact he had never managed in England before.
Stam honed his craft coaching at Ajax, while Hierro began his managerial career as an assistant at Real Madrid.
Reading’s decision to bring him in proved a big success, with Stam transforming the Royals from also-rans into play-off finalists.

Leeds have a Spanish connection already with board member Ivan Bravo, technical director Victor Orta, and coach Pep Clotet.
It would be a big gamble by owner Andrea Radrizzani to put his trust in Hierro compared to a ‘safe pair of hands’ like Alan Pardew, as the club look to capitalise on the progress made by Garry Monk last season.
Stam has shown a proven track record is not essential and success in the Championship can be achieved, and David Wagner too at Huddersfield.
Hierro could be an equally inspired choice if Leeds make the bold choice to bring in the Spaniard.
