The former Rangers midfielder has landed a new club, five years after quitting Ibrox for Sheffield Wednesday.

Rhys McCabe was once the apple of the Rangers fans’ eyes, after starring in a 3-2 win against Old Firm rivals Celtic in March 2012 – weeks after his debut for the Light Blues.

Three months later, the boyhood Ger broke their hearts, after refusing to transfer his contract to the newco, along with several of his then teammates.

Later unveiled as a Sheffield Wednesday player, McCabe – who only played nine times for Rangers in total – has never been forgiven by those he abandoned.

A year after his decision to quit Ibrox, the 24-year-old was vociferously booed by a strong following of Light Blues fans who’d travelled to Hillsborough for a pre-season friendly.

And his plight – having signed for League of Ireland side Sligo Rovers on Wednesday, after a spell at Dunfermline – continues to delight those of a Rangers persuasion, as evidenced by the following tweets.

(It goes without saying, there were loads more we couldn’t publish)

Where would McCabe be now, had he never left Rangers for Sheffield Wednesday?
