Eduardo Herrera is valued at £1m more than Motherwell goal machine Louis Moult – yet it appears that the former is Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha’s pick.
Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha
Just one week into June and Rangers’ squad already looks unrecognisable from the one that finished the Scottish Premiership season against St Johnstone a fortnight ago.
And, according to the Daily Record, The Gers will pay £1.5 million to bring Pumas UNAM striker Eduardo Herrera in from Mexico this summer. The 28-year-old may not be the most prolific of scorers but he is one of Pedro Caixinha’s trusted lieutenants.
After all, they know each other well from Herrera’s loan spell at Santos Laguna in 2013/14. And Caixinha went as far as to describe the nine-time international as a ‘complete striker’ (Daily Record).
Eduardo Herrera has three in nine for the Mexican national team
Though his recent goals record doesn’t quite reflect that. In 28 games last season, Herrera scored just six times. Furthermore, in his year under Caixinha at Santos Laguna, Herrera’s record of five in 21 is far from uninspiring.
Therefore, Rangers supporters could be forgiven for feeling a little sceptical as the club aim to find a goalscorer to ease the burden on 37-year-old Kenny Miller, the only player in their squad to hit double figures last season.
At £1.5 million, Herrera is certainly a risk. More so than Louis Moult anyway.
Motherwell’s Louis Moult
Safe option or inspired bargain?
The Scottish Sun reported late last month that Motherwell would be willing to sell the one-time Stoke City prospect to Rangers for just £500,000 and the out-of-favour Michael O’Halloran on a season-long loan.
Moult netted 30 goals in his two Scottish Premiership campaigns in Motherwell colours, 15 in each, and has cemented a reputation as one of the league’s most dangerous hitmen.

Therefore, he would have been a low-risk, affordable signing for a Rangers side in need of a youthful goalscorer.
However, Herrera’s imminent arrival, and the lack of movement in the Moult deal in recent weeks, suggests that Caixinha has turned his attentions elsewhere.
Specifically, towards a player completely unproven in Scotland with an uninspiring goal tally who will cost £1 million more.
