The Spanish side are also keeping an eye on the Sporting Lisbon and Portugal defender, and have decided to join the race.
Ruben Semedo tracks Cristiano Ronaldo
Newcastle United and Southampton will both have to fend off rival interest from Villarreal if they are to land Sporting Lisbon defender Ruben Semedo, with the La Liga side now joining the race for his signature, as reported by AS.
According to Portuguese newspaper Record, as reported by Sport Witness, Southampton were rumoured to be lining up a £17.4m bid for the 23-year-old centre back, who has represented the Portugal U21's on eight occasions, which would have trumped Newcastle's £10.4m offer with an additional £2.6m as add-ons.

With it looking likely that Virgil van Dijk could depart, Southampton will need to replace him and clearly see Semedo as a man to do that, while Newcastle need to bolster their backline ahead of their return to the Premier League.
Like Southampton, Villarreal are in the market for Semedo to replace a defender, as Mateo Musacchio departed the La Liga side to join Italian giants AC Milan very recently, and have identified Semedo as a perfect replacement for the Argentina international.

Quite where Semedo ends up remains to be seen, and Villarreal's interest makes things more difficult for both Newcastle and Southampton, as while those clubs can try and lure him with Premier League football, Villarreal can combat that easily.
El Submarino Amarillo finished fifth in La Liga last term and were only five points off a Champions League spot, so as one of Spain's better teams and with a Europa League campaign to look forward to, they stand a great chance of landing Semedo.
