Jeremy Mathieu is set to leave Barcelona this summer, according to reports
According to Spanish outlet AS, Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu is likely to be on the move in the coming months after being told that he is available to leave the Nou Camp this summer. And if Celtic fail in their pursuit of another defender who has represented the Catalan giants in the past, then perhaps the Hoops should consider offering the Frenchman the chance to come to Parkhead.
The Sun reported in May that the Bhoys were one of a number of clubs interested in Martin Caceres following his difficult spell with Premier League side Southampton.
Martin Caceres is on Celtic's radar
Caceres' recent career has been plagued by injury, with his appearance in the Saints' clash with Middlesbrough in May proving to be his first game since February 2016, so a deal would arguably be a gamble on Celtic's part.
Although Mathieu has not featured regularly for Barca in recent times either, he would still arrive at Celtic with plenty of minutes under his belt and would arguably be the ideal player to work alongside their cluster of fairly young centre-backs given that he has won everything at the Nou Camp, including two La Liga titles and a Champions League.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers
With Barcelona keen on moving the Frenchman on, he may also be available at a very decent price, which should boost Brendan Rodgers' chances of being able to significantly strengthen in other areas of the squad.
And given his experience and that he is so used to winning, he may be able to help the club navigate their way through the preliminary rounds of the Champions League once again before helping them put up an even better showing in the group-stages after the promise they often showed this past year, so perhaps he should be the player they turn to if they fail to land Caceres.
