Sheffield United have hit another stumbling block in their pursuit of Charlton Athletic striker Ricky Holmes, for whom they have already had a bid rejected.

According to the Sheffield Star, the Addicks are preparing to offer Holmes a new contract with improved terms to ward off interest from the Blades.

Charlton manager Karl Robinson will sit down with the 29-year-old to try and once again convince him to stay at the Valley and not reunite with former boss, Chris Wilder, at United.

Wilder has made no secret about the fact that he is interested in signing Holmes as he prepares his squad for life back in the Championship in 2017/18 after he guided them to the League One title.

The duo previously worked together at Northampton Town, where they were League Two champions in 2015/16 before both went their separate ways.

Wilder has already been busy in the transfer market, confirming the signings of Ched Evans, Enda Stevens and Nathan Thomas ahead of the new campaign.
