Northampton Town are leading the chase for Cheltenham forward Billy Waters, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.
Waters enjoyed a fantastic season for Cheltenham scoring 16 goals and completing a clean sweep at the club's player of the year awards.
The 22-year-old featured in all 46 of Cheltenham's League Two games, including 41 starts and he enjoyed the best season of his career to date.
Waters has bounced back from leaving Crewe two years ago by getting his career back on track at Cheltenham.
Waters' displays for Cheltenham brought him to the attention of clubs higher up the football pyramid with several League One sides showing an interest in the former Crewe youngster.
Waters' current deal at Cheltenham expires later this month and his suitors have been alerted to his possible availability on a free transfer as he has yet to agree a new deal at Whaddon Road.
Northampton are keen to win the race for Waters' signature as Cobblers boss Justin Edinburgh looks to build a squad capable of challenging for promotion from League One next season.
