According to Sky Sports, Monaco left back Benjamin Mendy has rejected Liverpool in order to push through a move to Manchester City.

Mendy, 22, was one of the stars of the Monaco side which not only won the Ligue 1 title this past season, breaking Paris Saint-Germain's recent dominance, but also excelled in the Champions League.

Monaco reached the semi-finals of Europe's premier club competition before beating beaten by Juventus, and they have already lost one key player, given that Bernardo Silva has joined Manchester City.

Monaco now face losing more players, and Sky Sports report that left back Benjamin Mendy is set to join Silva at the Etihad Stadium, having rejected a move to Liverpool.

City do have Aleksandar Kolarov at left back, but with Gael Clichy released at the end of his contract, Pep Guardiola needed a younger, more athletic left back – and he appears to have landed Mendy.

It's claimed that, whilst Mendy hasn't signed a contract with City, he is set to complete his move having chosen them ahead of a move to Premier League rivals Liverpool.

The Reds are in desperate need of a left back given that Alberto Moreno seemingly has no future under Jurgen Klopp, and right-footed midfielder James Milner played at left back all season.

Mendy would have been ideal for the role, but Liverpool appear to have missed out to City – and must go back to the drawing board as they pursue transfer targets instead of Mendy.
