According to The Northern Echo, Sunderland will use Manchester City's deal for Benfica goalkeeper Ederson to set their asking price for Jordan Pickford.

The Black Cats suffered relegation to the Championship in a dismal campaign, but other than top goalscorer Jermain Defoe, it was Pickford who impressed for the Black Cats the most.

The goalkeeper, 23, has come up through the ranks at the Stadium of Light, and after a host of loan spells in the Football League, he has now become Sunderland's first-choice stopper.

Touted for a big future in the Premier League and on the international stage, Pickford is bound to attract major interest this summer given Sunderland's relegation, but one club have already failed with a bid.

The Northern Echo report that Everton's £8million bid has been rejected, and Sunderland will push for a deal worth around £30million, due to Ederson's imminent move from Benfica to Manchester City.

Ederson will join City for £35million (Daily Mail), and Sunderland believe that they should receive a similar fee for Pickford, given they they're the same age, have major potential and have impressed domestically.

Sunderland's position is greatly weakened by their relegation, compared to Champions League club Benfica, but Pickford is certainly worth a lot more than Everton's opening £8million bid.

With a great command of his area, impressive reflexes and outstanding distribution, Pickford could be the goalkeeper of the future that Everton are looking for in place of Joel Robles and Maarten Stekelenburg – but they must considerably increase their bid.
