Manchester United have been linked with a move for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier in the summer transfer window.
Earlier this month, The Sun claimed that Dier, who can operate as a defender or as a defensive midfielder, wants to leave Tottenham.
According to The Daily Star, the North London outfit value Dier at more than £50 million and are determined to keep hold of him next season.
The Times has now reported that United manager Jose Mourinho has an alternative to Dier - AS Monaco’s 22-year-old defensive midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko.
“Antoine Griezmann tops the list of potential buys while Eric Dier, of Tottenham Hotspur, and Burnley’s central defender Michael Keane are other targets,” states the report in The Times. “Monaco’s Tiemoue Bakayoko is an alternative option to Dier.”
If indeed Bakayoko is an alternative to Dier, then it is good news for Tottenham. It means that United are not hell-bent on signing the England international.
Dier is one of the best players in the Premier League, and Spurs are a better team with him in it. The North London outfit will hope that United move on from their pursuit from the 23-year-old and focus more on Bakayoko instead.
