According to The Telegraph, Newcastle United winger Matt Ritchie has urged international team-mate Tom Cairney to make a move from Fulham to St. James' Park this summer.

Newcastle's promotion to the Premier League means that manager Rafael Benitez will be looking for new signings this summer, and a playmaker appears to be near the top of his wish list.

Fulham star Cairney fits the bill, given that Newcastle enquired about signing him in January, but were rebuffed by the Cottagers as they chased promotion to the top flight themselves.

Now, with Fulham losing to Reading in the Championship play-offs on Tuesday, The Telegraph report that Newcastle are preparing a new move to land Cairney this summer.

The Magpies are allegedly willing to offer £12million initially, though Fulham want around £20million for their midfield maestro after a sensational season – and his Scotland international team-mate Matt Ritchie has allegedly urged him to make the move to St. James' Park.

Cairney hit 13 goals and ten assists in the Championship this season, and the 26-year-old is believed to have aspirations of playing in the Premier League, with Newcastle – the club Cairney's grandfather allegedly supports – positioning themselves at the front of the queue.

The former Hull and Blackburn man deserves a chance to impress in the top flight having starred in the Championship, but Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic will be gearing up for another promotion push next season, and won't want to lose his star man.

With Newcastle pushing, and Ritchie urging Cairney to join him on Tyneside, all signs are currently pointing to the playmaker joining Newcastle, and manager Benitez will want a deal done sooner rather than later.
