Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer is still somewhat sceptical despite the news manager Rafa Benitez will remain at the club.
Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez celebrates winning the league with the trophy
After the euphoria of promotion back to the Premier League, Newcastle United fans were delighted to see Benitez commit his immediate future to the club but legend Alan Shearer is remaining cautious.
The Magpies are back in the big time next season after bouncing back at the first time of asking.
Newcastle supporters are under no illusions that the club will need to substantially strengthen the squad if they want to be competitive.
How much money would be available to the Spaniard to achieve that was reported to have been the top item on the agenda when owner Mike Ashley met with Benitez in the wake of promotion.
And despite agreeing to stay, Shearer told Coral he is reluctant to get too carried away.
“Newcastle won the Championship and then of course a few days later Rafa has talks with the owner, Mike Ashley, says he’s staying and Mike has promised that there is big funds there for Rafa to spend, which is great news,” Shearer told Coral on Twitter.

“But actions speak louder than words and we’ll have to wait and see whether that will happen but hopefully will and it’s all good news for Newcastle.
There’s big improvements needed and Rafa will know in which positions, I’m sure he’s already started the process of going out and trying to sign players.”
After years of searching Newcastle finally have a manager fit to fill the boots of the beloved Sir Bobby Robson.
But Shearer is right, the owners’ previous lack of genuine ambition and proper investment has coloured peoples’ judgement.
Benitez does not suffer fools gladly
Benitez has managed some of the top clubs in Europe in recent seasons including Real Madrid, Napoli and Chelsea.
And after sacrificing himself for a season in the Championship he will want to be handed a sizeable transfer war chest to establish the St James Park outfit as a genuine top flight side.
The Spaniard is the kind of strong-minded character to walk away if promises aren’t delivered so Shearer is right actions will speak louder than words.
