Ricky Holmes struck 13 times in a superb campaign for Charlton Athletic and could have earned himself a chance in the Championship with Sheffield United.

At the age of 29, Ricky Holmes is certainly something of a late bloomer. The wily winger is only now starting to climb up the footballing ladder after spending the entire early years of his career plying his trade on the lower rungs of the English game.

However, seven years after making his Football League debut with fourth tier Barnet, the former Portsmouth and Northampton Town favourite could finally have earned the chance to prove his worth in the Championship.

According to Kent Live, League One champions Sheffield United have made Holmes one of their top summer targets.

And, based on his performances for Charlton Athletic this season, you can see why. Holmes has been nothing short of inspirational in a below-par campaign for The Addicks, netting 13 goals in League One while also cruising to the club’s Player of the Year award.

However, with just one year remaining on his contract at The Valley, and with Holmes keen to test himself at a higher level, a move to Sheffield United should appeal.

And Blades boss Chris Wilder has witnessed first hand just what an unstoppable force the tricky, unpredictable wideman can be on top form. Holmes ran United ragged in a narrow 2-1 defeat at Bramall Lane in March, his sumptuous free-kick capping a fine individual performance.

And with 30-goal veteran Billy Sharp (below) and free-scoring midfielder Kieran Freeman the only Blades to hit double figures in league football this season, Holmes promises to add further cutting edge in the final third, as well as the unrivalled ability to create something out of nothing.
