Newcastle United clinched the Championship title this afternoon with a 3-0 home win over Barnsley, with the Magpies leapfrogging Brighton into top spot.

Rafael Benitez's men had already guaranteed promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, but still obliterated Barnsley with a confident performance at St. James' Park.

Ayoze Perez put Newcastle 1-0 up in the first half, before Chancel Mbemba and Dwight Gayle fired goals in the second period to give Benitez a 3-0 victory to end the season.

Meanwhile, Brighton were taking on Aston Villa, and whilst they were on course for a 1-0 win after Glenn Murray converted a penalty, with Nathan Baker being sent off for a foul on Sam Baldock, Jack Grealish's deflected strike handed Villa a 1-1 draw.

Newcastle were subsequently crowned as Championship winners, and goalscorer Perez received a surprise message of congratulations from Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on Twitter.

After celebrating winning the title, Perez received a simple congratulations message from the Dortmund superstar, who told him to 'keep working' ahead of his Premier League return next season.

Newcastle almost signed Aubameyang from Saint-Etienne back in 2013, as The Chronicle quoted the striker as saying in 2016, and fans jokingly begged the Gabon international to finally make the move to Tyneside to play alongside Perez.

Given that Aubameyang is one of the most in demand strikers in Europe and could surely command a transfer fee of over £50million, the chances of him signing for Newcastle are slim to none - but Magpies fans used their celebrations to try and lure the striker to England.
