Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen to agree a new contract with defender Toby Alderweireld.
According to reports from the Evening Standard, the Belgian defender is seeking parity with the club’s top earners like Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris.
Spurs have reached similar deals with nearly all their key players since 2016. And Alderweireld could be in line for the next bumper deal.
The 28-year-old is under contract for two more years, but Spurs have an option to extend it to 2020.
According to journalist Kristof Terreur, Alderweireld has a £25m release clause. However, it is only applicable till the summer of 2019 if the club decide to take up the option of extending his contract.
Alderweireld said that he is ‘very pleased’ with his current situation at Tottenham, and believes that Spurs will win a trophy in the near future.
"When I signed, it was for a number of years and I am very pleased with how things are going now. It is an honour to play for Tottenham,” said Alderweireld, as quoted by The Standard.
The Belgian defender joined Tottenham in 2015 and is a key member in Mauricio Pochettino’s side. He is a regular member of the Belgium national team as well and has made 65 appearances for his country.
