Tottenham defender misses out controversially to Chelsea defender.
The PFA Team of the Year has been announced and as usual there are one or two perplexing decisions.
Tottenham Hotspur have been gaining on Chelsea in the Premier League title race with the lead cut to just four points, and their rock solid defence has been a key part in that.
Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld celebrates
Alongside Belgian colleague Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld has been outstanding.
Spurs have conceded fewer goals than any other team this seasons (22), with Chelsea allowing 27.
They have conceded just one in their last four games, and when beaten 2-1 by Chelsea last year it was no coincidence Alderweireld was missing through injury.
Chelsea's Gary Cahill
Cahill has a chance to prove his case this weekend when Chelsea take on Tottenham at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-final.
The England defender may rightly feel under appreciated for his contribution to their success in recent seasons. He certainly seems to have earned the respect of his peers.
Here is a look at how Twitter reacted to Alderweireld's omission...
Alderweireld Toby should have been in that PFA team of the season instead of Cahill or maybe even Keane from Burnley— Ellis 金 ™ (@ellis_lunayo) April 20, 2017
Alderweireld must be spewing not getting in that PFA team of the year above Cahill— Perry Jones (@jonesperry9) April 20, 2017
Alderweireld is the best defender in that league and apart of the best defence in the league. How he's not in that team of year is a joke— Brian (@_bhealy) April 20, 2017
Surely Alderweireld should be in the PFA team? Injuries cost him perhaps? He's head n shoulders better than Cahill— Stephen McCann (@Muccas1982) April 20, 2017
Alderweireld > Cahill. Shouldn't even be a close battle https://t.co/fePkcS6GZ6— James Robinson (@JamesRobDT) April 20, 2017
The PFA shortlist is always a joke. Cahill ahead of Alderweireld?!? Sksdsjjwjdnn— Courts (@KingKongCourts) April 20, 2017
Cahill over Alderweireld or Vertonghen is a felony. https://t.co/wzpU4wap3X— Stephen Giannelli Jr (@stovenjiannelli) April 20, 2017
