Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp and Lucas Leiva
Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva says he wants to continue with the Anfield club, but he does not know what the future holds for him.
The Brazilian midfielder has been at the club since 2007, and has made over 240 Premier League appearances for the Reds.
Lucas - current situation
Lucas has been a great servant for Liverpool, but frankly, the club should have got rid of him a long time ago. He lost his status as a first team regular a long time ago, but has stayed there at the club mainly as a squad player.
The 30-year-old has 12 months remaining on his current deal, and as such he has not been offered a new deal.
“I don’t really know what will happen. I just need to focus on the last five games,” said Lucas, as quoted by the Independent. “There’s no doubt about my commitment to Liverpool, I just need to wait until the end of the season, work hard and make a decision together with the club.”
With 84.6% passing accuracy, and two assists to his name, Lucas has been more than effective in filling up for the injured Jordan Henderson this season. However, whether it will warrant him a new deal remains to be seen.
Should Newcastle make a move in the summer?
Rafa Benitez had signed Lucas for Liverpool and he should consider signing the Brazilian again this summer. The Brazilian may have lost his sharpness a bit, but he is good enough to play regularly for a mid-table Premier League club.
The Spaniard could be looking to bolster every key areas of his squad with proven quality or experienced Premier League players, and Lucas fits all the bill.
However, most importantly, Lucas would arrive on cheap given the length of his contract remaining at Liverpool. He still has a lot of football left in him, and should consider moving to Newcastle where he would get regular game time.
