A report in the Daily Mirror has suggested Arsenal have become the latest Premier League heavyweight to register an interest in Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk seems to be one of the most highly rated centre-backs in the top flight currently, as the Mirror reports that Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool and Manchester City are all keeping a keen eye on the Dutchman.

The Mirror adds that Arsene Wenger has earmarked the former Celtic man as the ideal player to come in and help the Gunners make a more permanent transition to a back three after his brilliant spell with the Saints.

However, the team that wins the race for his signature will have to part with a hefty sum it seems, with the Mirror reporting that the 25-year-old will cost around £50 million.

Given Arsenal's struggles down the years to find the perfect centre-backs, it is arguably a smart move targeting van Dijk as he has shown during his time on the south coast that he has the potential to be one of the best defenders in the division - if he is not already - and is not afraid to drive out of the back-line with the ball at his feet, which should excite Gunners fans if they are able to pull off a deal.

But Arsenal supporters will know all too well that bagging his signature will be easier said than done given the number of sides reportedly in the running to pull off a deal.
