The Telegraph have reported today that Eric Dier’s future at Tottenham Hotspur could be in some doubt, as the England international sees himself as a central midfielder.
Dier has generally been deployed as a right-sided centre-back, in Spurs’ three man defence this season.
However, the 23-year-old reportedly wants to be shifted back into midfield.
Tottenham cannot promise him that, due to the form of Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama in those positions, and that has caused questions to be asked.
But, Spurs fans may not need to worry - when judging by Dier’s past quotes about the positional change.
Dier broke through at Spurs as a centre-back, before being converted into a midfield role, and when talking about playing in defence before, he said to the Daily Star: “I'm very happy and I'm happy to be playing wherever the manager wants. I enjoy just playing so I'm very happy to be playing anywhere.
"They're different positions but obviously when you play at centre back you've got a bit more time and everything in front of you, it's a bit different, but I enjoy doing both.”
These comments come from 2016, and unless Dier’s viewpoint has significantly changed in just over 12 months, there should be no reason for Spurs fans to worry too much about the latest reports speculating over his future.
