Rob Holding was a surprise name in Arsenal's starting XI against Middlesbrough last night and repaid manager Arsene Wenger with a big performance.

Holding was deployed as part of a back three along with Gabriel Paulista and Laurent Koscielny.

The Gunners edged to a 2-1 win thanks to a brace from expensive duo Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, with Alvaro Negredo scoring an equaliser in between.

Holding, a low profile summer signing from Bolton Wanderers, has spent most of the season on the sidelines despite positive displays when called upon.

Last night was his first appearance since February, and the first time he has played in the Premier League since August.

Considering his lack of action his performance at the Riverside was impressive. He managed five clearances and one tackle, while completing 85 per cent of his passes.

The 21-year-old is still adjusting to a step up in class after playing in the Championship last season, but coped admirably last night, suggesting Arsene Wenger may have found a bargain.

Holding's performance even had some fans insisting he stay in the team until the end of the season, a big call considering there are matches against Tottenham, Manchester United and a semi-final with Manchester City coming up.
