Alan Shearer has celebrated Newcastle United’s victory over Burton Albion last night on social media website Twitter.
Newcastle just about got past Burton, after being punished by a bizarre refereeing decision from Keith Stroud.
Stroud disallowed a penalty and gave Burton a free kick inside their own penalty area, after Dwight Gayle was guilty of encroachment.
However, the correct punishment was to retake the spot kick, with Stroud misapplying the rule.
The PGMOL have apologised for the decision, but Shearer couldn’t ignore it when he delivered his opinion on Newcastle’s victory.
In the end, a goal from Matt Ritchie proved to be the difference between the two sides.
The victory has boosted Newcastle’s promotion chances, with Rafael Benitez’s side well placed to go up.
Newcastle currently sit at the top of the Championship table - and they have built up a 10 point lead over third placed Huddersfield Town.
